Context 

AI has moved from systems that mainly generate or interpret information to increasingly autonomous tools that can write and run code, use online services and act on behalf of users. The debate is now shifting beyond familiar concerns such as misinformation, deepfakes and job losses to a harder question: can increasingly powerful AI still be reliably monitored and controlled?

The debate has intensified as leading AI companies release more capable models. OpenAI’s Astra has reportedly reached a “Critical” cybersecurity capability level, while Meta’s Muse reflects the growing use of AI agents that can take actions rather than simply answer questions. Anthropic has also said tests of its new Mythos model showed it was highly capable in cybersecurity and hacking, outperforming human experts. Reported incidents involving AI agents and cybersecurity systems have further raised questions about whether existing safeguards are enough.

Warnings are also coming from inside the industry. Researchers and executives at major AI companies have raised concerns about the future loss of control.
