AI Traffic Enforcement Planned for Dhaka-Mawa Expressway

If you frequently drive on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway, it might be time to ease off the gas pedal. Authorities are planning to roll out AI-powered traffic cameras across the entire route to catch speeders and reckless drivers, complete with a fully automated ticketing system.

In a Nutshell

  • The plan is to cover the entire 55-kilometer highway with AI cameras that can instantly spot speeding, illegal overtaking, and other risky moves.
  • Fines and tickets will be processed automatically, meaning authorities won't have to rely solely on traffic police flagging people down.
  • The expressway desperately needs a safety upgrade: between June 2022 and October 2026, there were nearly 600 accidents that tragically left 152 people dead and 950 injured.
  • Some AI cameras are already in place, but this expansion will ensure continuous, 24/7 monitoring.

Context

This isn't exactly a brand-new initiative. Back in July, the Highway Police mentioned that AI cameras were already up and running at a few key spots along the route. What makes this new proposal different is the scale: the goal is to cover the whole expressway from end to end and make the legal action completely automated.

Why It Matters

The Dhaka-Mawa Expressway is a massive lifeline connecting the capital to 21 southern districts.Unfortunately, it also has a heartbreaking track record for crashes. Reckless speeding and dangerous lane changes are the biggest culprits, turning one of the country's most vital transport routes into a notoriously dangerous one.

What We Think

We know that AI cameras can work—they’ve already been tested in parts of Dhaka, where they quickly forced drivers to follow the rules and drastically cut down on traffic violations. When people know an automatic ticket is guaranteed to find them, they are much more likely to stick to the speed limit and drive safely.
