Dengue Surges Nationwide: Hospitalisations Top 1,000 Daily
Dengue is surging across Bangladesh, with daily hospitalisations above 1,000 for four consecutive days and experts warning the outbreak could worsen through September and October. With cases now spread across all 64 districts, the pressure is mounting on hospitals and on the country’s approach to controlling the disease.

Context
Dengue has become a recurring public health problem in Bangladesh, with outbreaks growing beyond Dhaka in recent years. The current surge is now spreading across the country, while Aedes mosquitoes have reached districts, upazilas and villages.
The scale of the increase is also significant. Hospitalisations more than doubled from July to August, and the latest daily figures have continued to set new highs. Experts expect September and October to remain difficult as rainfall and temperatures continue to favour mosquito breeding.
Why It Matters
Hospitals are already struggling with the increase in patients. Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital has 250 dengue patients against 140 dedicated beds, while other hospitals are opening additional wards as admissions rise.
The pressure is likely to continue if mosquito control does not reduce transmission. Professor Dr Kabirul Bashar, a medical entomologist and zoology professor at Jahangirnagar University, says routine fogging and larviciding are ineffective without first identifying where Aedes mosquitoes are breeding. So, instead of treating every area in the same way, control measures need to follow the mosquitoes.
There is also a new option worth examining. In December 2025, Bangladesh signed an agreement with the World Mosquito Program to study Wolbachia, a method in which male Aedes mosquitoes carrying the naturally occurring bacterium are released so that their offspring do not develop. Singapore’s programme has reduced residents’ dengue risk by more than 70%, although Bangladesh will need to establish whether the method can produce similar results here and at what cost.
What We Think
We must move beyond managing annual dengue surges and focus on proactive mitigation.
By centering targeted mosquito surveillance and testing supplementary tools like Wolbachia, the country can use the resulting data to optimize its control measures.
Ultimately, however, these preventative strategies will fail unless backed by a strong healthcare infrastructure equipped to treat those who are already affected.
