490 Arrested in Dhaka Raids, but the Arrest Count Tells Only Part of the Story

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 490 people and filed 42 cases during raids across Dhaka over 24 hours. Mirpur recorded the most arrests, with 123, according to a police statement.

In a Nutshell

  • The arrests took place across eight police divisions, DMP said.
  • Mirpur recorded 123 arrests, followed by Tejgaon with 92 and Motijheel with 62.
  • Wari recorded 57 arrests, Lalbagh 52, Gulshan 40, Ramna 39 and Uttara 25.
  • Police seized 15 mobile phones, two auto-rickshaws, a private car, several other items and Tk3,305 in cash. One victim was recovered.
  • However, it does not specify the allegations against those arrested or the cases filed.

Context

DMP said the arrests followed raids in different police station areas of the capital over the previous 24 hours. The department filed 42 cases and said it recovered evidence and narcotics, though it does not specify the alleged offences or link particular seized items to specific cases. The arrest figures varied widely across the eight divisions, from 123 in Mirpur to 25 in Uttara. Further legal action was underway, according to the police statement.

Why It Matters

The 490 arrests follow a familiar pattern of DMP crackdowns since the BNP-led government took office this year. Earlier attempts had similar reports like 436 arrests in July, 418 in August, 434 in September, 510 on October 16 and 481 on October 17 but generally have offered little detail on the alleged offences, evidence or legal outcomes, according to different reports by BSS. Similarly, this report does not say how many people were arrested in each case, whether those detained were suspects or accused in existing cases, or how many were later released or brought before a court.

What We Think

Crime control is necessary if the aim of these raids is to make Dhaka safer. However, these arrest counts alone do not establish the crimes. The public has a right to know the allegations, the evidence and whether each case proceeds in court. Without that information, the raids appear more like political house-cleaning than transparent law enforcement.
