Satkhira MP Gazi Nazrul & first wife on remand after arrest for  alleged involvement in second wife’s suicide

In a Nutshell:

• Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife Moksuda Islam have been shown arrested in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of Nazrul’s second wife, 19-year-old Mariam Khatun. Both were initially taken into police custody for questioning and after Mariam’s body was found hanging at the MP’s flat in NAM Bhaban on Sunday evening.
• A Dhaka court on Monday granted four days’ remand for Gazi Nazrul Islam and one day for his first wife Moksuda Islam in the case over Mariam Khatun’s death. Police had sought seven days for both.
• Mariam’s father SM Masum Billah filed the case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station shortly after her death, accusing Nazrul and Moksuda of physically and mentally torturing his daughter and also accusing her maternal uncle, Obaidur, of encouraging the marriage. 
• According to the complaint, Mariam had repeatedly called family members to tell them about the abuse. 
• Masum said Nazrul called him at around 5:30pm on Sunday and asked him to come to the flat. He arrived to find people gathered outside a locked room where Mariam was reportedly hanging from a ceiling fan by a scarf.
• Police recovered several handwritten notes and diary pages from Mariam’s room in which she expressed betrayal, emotional distress, and a sense of defeat in her relationship with Nazrul. One note says she entered the “battle” with complete trust but lost, while another expresses regret over choosing a married man. 
• Police said they initially believe the writings may belong to Mariam, but CID forensic analysis will be needed to confirm their authorship.
• The death comes two months after Nazrul and Mariam became the centre of a major controversy. Videos showing them in an intimate setting circulated on social media in July, costing Nazrul his Jamaat-e-Islami membership over “moral misconduct”.
• Nazrul addressed the controversy by acknowledging Mariam as his second wife and said they had married on June 17 with the consent of his first wife and both families. 
• Police have prepared an inquest report and sent Mariam’s body for autopsy. Investigators are examining both the circumstances of her death and the allegations of abuse and instigation surrounding it.
