Mongla Port Earns Record Tk 388 Crore Revenue in FY26
Mongla Port earned a record Tk387.95 crore in revenue during FY2025-26, exceeding its annual target by more than Tk40 crore. The port also recorded significant increases in cargo and container handling.

- Mongla Port Authority (MPA) Chairman Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mostafa, at a meeting with journalists on 22 September, disclosed that Mongla Port earned Tk387.95 crore in revenue in FY2025-26, against a target of Tk347.87 crore.
- Cargo handling reached 1.2251 crore metric tonnes, 17.66% higher than the previous fiscal year with a total of 815 vessels arriving at the port during the fiscal year.
- Container handling rose 38.49% year-on-year to 29,714 TEUs.
- The port handled 12,075 reconditioned vehicles, 496 more than the previous year.
- Mongla currently has annual capacity for 1,500 vessels, 15 million metric tonnes of cargo, 100,000 TEUs of containers and 20,000 vehicles.
- Several projects are underway to expand the port, including new container terminals, yards and additional support vessels.
Context
Mongla Port is Bangladesh’s second-largest seaport and serves as an important gateway for trade in the southwestern region. Recently activity at the port is increasing particularly in cargo and container handling. During FY2025-26, cargo handling increased by 17.66% from the previous year, while container handling rose by 38.49%. The port also exceeded its revenue target by more than Tk40 crore. The port authority is now working on several projects including the construction of container terminals and yards, procurement of tugboats and other support vessels, and upgrades to port facilities to increase its capacity. Alongside, a waste-management project completed in 2025 is being used to collect waste from ships and industries and remove discharged oil, with the aim of reducing pollution in the Pashur Channel and protecting the surrounding waterways and the Sundarbans. Another major project, the Upgrade of Mongla Port, is being financed through India’s Line of Credit-3 which is scheduled to be completed by June 2027.
Why it matters
The rise in revenue, cargo and container handling can be read as that Mongla is becoming more active as a trade route. But higher activity also means the port needs enough capacity to handle future growth. MPA Chairman says navigability along its 144-kilometre channel is an existing major challenge, alongside ageing support vessels and the need for skilled manpower.

Mongla Port achieving a record revenue of Tk 387.95 crore in FY26, alongside significant growth in cargo and container handling, is a milestone for Bangladesh's maritime sector. With ongoing capacity expansion projects and infrastructure upgrades underway, the port is in a good place to ease pressure on other major hubs and significantly increase national trade.
