Tara Miah, 20-year-old Bangladeshi shot dead by BSF at Moulvibazar border
In a Nutshell:
- Tara Mia, a 20-year-old youth shot dead along the Kulaura border of Moulvibazar
- On Saturday night, at the Magurali border in Prithimpasha union of Kulaura upazila, where he was allegedly caught past the Indian border.
- Previously, on 12th of June, Mujib Ali, another 20-year-old youth, was caught by the BSF forces in Dattagram village, Sharifpur union within the upazila.
Why it matters
Two border killings within a recent timeframe signify an act of extrajudicial killing, and this brings into question international human rights laws and the conduct of geopolitical ethics. This incident has caused objections from the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), as they have already sent a letter of protest to India’s Border Security Forces (BSF) to express dissatisfaction. However, the rate of border killings continues till today, despite multiple displays of objections from the BGB.
What we think
Recently, the section on border killings has been taken away from the July Revolution Memorial Museum, which has left us wondering- why are we unable to question an act of extrajudicial killing by paying a homage? The result: the demise of a youth like Tara Mia and Mujib Ali. One of the particular factors mentioned post the July Uprising is that there should be a permanent halt on border killings conducted by the BSF, but in reality we barely see any reflection of the demands made post the Uprising being displayed, and the government has yet to be able to diplomatically handle reducing the cases of border killings.
