In a Nutshell

  • Bangladesh exported over $817 million worth of garments to the US in August.
  • This was a 25.65% increase from $650.34 million in August 2025.
  • RMG exports to the US reached $1.61 billion in July-August, up 11.42% year-on-year.
  • The US remains Bangladesh’s largest single RMG export market.
  • Exporters are seeing stronger orders, particularly for winter apparel.

Context

In FY2025-26, Bangladesh earned around $7.74 billion from RMG exports to the US, out of total merchandise exports worth about $9.04 billion to the country. The latest growth comes as the August jump was partly linked to the timing of winter-apparel orders, with exporters receiving comparatively more orders for the coming months.

Why It Matters

The US market is already a major source of Bangladesh’s export earnings, so faster growth there has a direct impact on the country’s foreign-exchange earnings and manufacturing sector. But as the numbers show relying mainly on higher volumes of conventional garments has limits, Bangladesh is now looking at a larger opportunity like earning more from higher-value and diversified products, rather than simply shipping more of the same garments.

What We Think

The US market is already buying Bangladesh’s garments at scale. The bigger opportunity now lies in turning that market access into more value per shipment and a broader export base. The 25.65% jump is encouraging, but one exceptional strong month does not necessarily represent a permanent change in export performance. The more important factor is to sustain this growth while Bangladesh moves into higher-value products.
